Liam Payne tragically died on Oct. 16, after he fell off a third-floor balcony in a Buenos Aires, Argentina, hotel
Liam Payne‘s father, Geoff Payne, is cooperating with the Argentine authorities in their investigation into Liam’s unexpected death, a National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 states in a press release translated from Spanish.
On Friday, Oct. 18, Geoff arrived at the Argentine hotel where Liam fell to his death two days earlier on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The late singer was 31 when he fell off a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires.
On Monday, Oct. 21, a partial autopsy revealed the One Direction alum “had multiple substances in his system,” per an ABC News source. One of the substances found in Payne’s body was “pink cocaine,” a recreational drug that generally includes a combination of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA — and not necessarily cocaine — according to the National Capital Poison Center.
However, the toxicological and histopathological studies needed for his autopsy report have not been completed. As a result, Geoff is working with the Argentine authorities.
He “expressed his desire for an investigation and knowledge of what happened and expressed to the prosecutor his willingness to testify about everything he knows about his son’s life, which can help the investigation,” per the prosecutor’s office release.
Geoff will be “accompanied by a police official until his judicial formalities have been completed.”
“With respect to the victim, all information gathered from the investigation will first be given to the family, and given his public exposure, communication will be limited to all institutional channels,” read the press release.
As for the investigation, authorities are conducting research on Liam’s phone, computers, photographs and videos on his camera.
“At the same time, testimonials are being accepted to reconstruct his final hours at the scene, a process that continues with the hotel staff, acquaintances, medical and technical professionals, and other people linked to the victim through his work,” authorities said in the release.
Liam’s body will stay in Argentina until all reports are finished. Additionally, since he was a British citizen, the United Kingdom government has been informed of the legal proceedings.
Prior to the Monday reports of the substances in his system, the day after his death, on Thursday, Oct. 17, a preliminary autopsy report released stated Liam died from “multiple traumas” and internal and external bleeding.
That same day, Liam’s One Direction bandmates released a joint statement following Payne’s death. “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” their statement posted to Instagram began.

His family also released statements to the BBC and PA Media, saying, “We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul.”
